Making Summer Treats with an American Girl Cookbook!

Make some delicious summer treats with this American Girl cookbook for kids! #cookbookforkids #cookingwithkids #summerrecipesWhen I was a kid, I read a ton of the American Girl books. My sister and I both had our favorites (I loved Molly, she loved Samantha), and we read the books, did the crafts, and put on the plays. I love that these books introduced readers to strong young girls and the historical time periods that they lived in, and I am really excited that my daughter has started showing interest in the American Girl stories. I have also been impressed over the years with their nonfiction books and their quest for teaching young girls all about themselves and what they can do. So we were thrilled when we were given the chance to check out their new Summer Treats American Girl cookbook!

The TRUTH about Kiwi Crates!

Are you looking for the truth about Kiwi Crates? This review shares the facts about Kiwi Crates and their other subscription boxes. #subscriptionboxesforkids #kiwicrates #STEMsubscriptionAs a mom and former teacher, I am always on the lookout for great educational resources for families. So when we found KiwiCo subscription boxes, I was excited to try them out. After a year of trying out the Koala Crate for ages 2-4, we moved up to the Kiwi Crate for 5-8 year olds. And I am ready to share the truth about Kiwi Crates.

They are AMAZING.

Every month, my daughter is excited to get her Kiwi Crate in the mail. We track it after it ships, and she takes guesses on what theme it will be about. When it does arrive, she immediately opens it up and we get started. I love the broad range of topics that we have had the opportunity to explore, as well as the skills she has been able to practice.

The Contents

I have been impressed every time we have opened one of their boxes. The educational magazine includes an introduction to the topic through games, colorful cartoons, and fun facts. Not only does the magazine get my daughter interested in the topic with it’s cute illustrations and interesting explanations, but the parent guide walks us through the activities with easy to follow instructions. I love how easily the instructions are laid out in the guide. All of the components for each activity are also included, making it possible for us to start them right away.

The Activities

The most impressive part of the Kiwi boxes for me as a parent are the smart ways that they create the activities. In one of the boxes, my daughter was supposed to paint wooden beads for friendship bracelets. The box included foam blocks and a dowel so she could paint the beads without holding them or rolling away. When she built a grasping tool, the instructions used stickers to hold the pieces together while she built it. All of these small details show just how much the people at Kiwi Co think about the activities and the kids who will be doing them.

The Product Lines

I am thrilled that Kiwi Co offers so many product lines for different ages and skill levels. My daughter will be turning 5 soon, so I recently changed her subscription to the next level up. I was a little nervous that it would be too difficult for her, but she has really enjoyed it. The magazine has been a little more over her head than the last box, but it just encourages us to take it slowly.

One of the nice parts about the Kiwi Co boxes is that the things that kids create can often be used again and again. Some of the items that my daughter has made through our time with Kiwi Co is a rainbow handbag, an arcade claw game, a bear backpack, a glowing campfire, a xylophone, and a dinosaur costume. A day doesn’t go by where we don’t use one of the items that we have made.

Kelly Stays Home: The Science of Coronavirus was written by Lauren Block MD MPH and Adam Block PhD and illustrated by Alex Brissenden. The authors are a married couple with 3 young children. They wrote this book to teach children about coronavirus, transmission of viruses, and why we are staying home. It tackles the many questions that kids have right now, including why they can’t go to the playground, and why they can’t see their friends and their grandparents. The book also tackles vaccines, and shares a great metaphor for how they help the body to fight off viruses.

The illustrations are colorful and do a great job of illustrating the virus and the importance of washing your hands to defend against it. The book comes in two forms: a Little Kid pdf (for ages 3-6) and a Big Kid pdf. (for ages 7-11). They both cover the same story and topics, but with an age appropriate amount of text.

How to Make Sight Words Fun

Looking to make sight words fun? This easy sight word practice can provide tons of fun learning opportunities for kids! #sightwords #sightwordgames #sightwordpracticeWith school being closed for the remainder of the year, I am trying to find even more fun ways to get learning into our day without making my daughter feel overworked. We have recently begun working on sight words. So to get our practice in, I decided to come up with some fun ways to review them with her. This easy sight word practice can be adapted to whatever your kids are interested in and provide tons of fun learning opportunities.

My sister and I are huge Harry Potter fans, and we decided to make a flying keys mobile for a friend of ours that was having a baby. So my sister bought little dragonfly wings like these for us to use. She offered me the leftover wings, knowing I would find some way to use them. I decided to attach them to our sight word cards with a little sticky tack, and create “Sight Word Fairies”.

To start with, I printed out these flash cards for the first 100 sight words on the Fry Sight Words List. I cut them out and put them in a little bag. I have started taking them out a dozen at a time and focusing on those.

sight word activitySight Word Fairy Hunt

I started with some of the sight words that I was pretty sure my daughter already knew and recognized. I hid them throughout our living room and encouraged her to find them. In order to “capture” them, she had to read them correctly. If she read one incorrectly, it flew away and she had to find it again. She had so much fun finding them and capturing them, that we have played this game over and over.

Sight Word Bug Swat

My daughter is going through a bug thing right now, so the next day we pretended that they were “sight word bugs” and she had to swat them with a fly swatter. I laid them on the ground and encouraged her to swat the correct word as I called them out to her. On another day, we were playing with her dolls and we pretended that she had to protect her baby from the “bugs”. As they got closer to her and her baby, she had to call them out and swat them before they reached them. She had a blast “protecting” her baby doll.

Tons of Sight Word Games

This simple idea can be changed around to suit whatever your child is interested in at the moment. We have also been inspired recently by the show “Bluey” and their fairy hunt episode, as well as adventures in the Magic Tree House books, and even Chewbacca chasing off the Porgs from Star Wars. Each of these interests gave me a starting off point to include a little sight word review in our day. This activity doesn’t have to take a long time, and it can be done any time of the day. With all the different ways that we can use these little winged cards, she has yet to get bored with practicing sight words.

Conquering Sight Words

After we have done this several times with the same words, she starts to master them. Once she has “conquered” a certain word, we put it into  a “Word Treasure Chest”. Then I remove the wings and add them to a new flashcard. This has allowed her to see how many words she has already conquered and how far she has come. Together, we will come up with a prize or celebration for when she has conquered all of the words.

This easy sight word activity is so adaptable and fun that kids will be asking to practice! How You Can Access Affordable Children’s Books Almost Instantly

Get access to tons of affordable children's books, educational videos and more with this educational app for kids! #educationalapp #kidsbooks #educationalvideosAre you suddenly homeschooling your kids? We are all looking for fun and accessible educational apps for kids, so today I’m sharing our review of the Samsung Kids+ app. They are even offering a deal now to help parents and kids!

I am all about giving kids access to lots of great reading materials and educational products. While I obviously believe in surrounding kids with physical texts for them to explore, I also recognize the ease and value of e-readers and tablets, and the huge amount of resources that they can offer. So I was excited when we had the opportunity to check out this educational app for kids.

I was a hard sell for e-readers many years ago. I didn’t think I could give up my physical books. But I was soon won over when I realized the large amount of books that I would have access to with an e-reader. (Don’t get me wrong, I still love my physical books, but I also add to my collection in digital form now too).

The Details

Samsung Kids+ provides a wide library full of books, educational games, and kid friendly shows and videos at your fingertips. All of the content is kid friendly, and includes some of their favorite authors and characters. They can practice important skills in reading, math, and science, with some of the characters that they already love. The monthly subscription is extremely affordable, especially considering the incredible amount of content included!

For parents, a big draw of the Samsung Kids+ app is the pin-protected Parents section. Parents can monitor the total time played each week, as well as the balance of subject areas that kids have interacted with. These tools are a great way for parents to keep track of their child’s screen time and set daily limits. They can also see the areas that their kids may need to focus on. With different user profiles, multiple kids can use the same app and parents can track each child’s individual usage.

The Books

Obviously my favorite part of this app is the children’s books! The library includes some of our favorite books including titles from Dr. Suess, Sandra Boynton, and Eric Carle. There are also titles from My Little Pony, Caillou, and Chuggington. Each of these books offers different ways to interact with the story. In addition to offering “Read to Me”, or “Read by Myself” options, the different apps also include opportunities to interact with the illustrations and expand on the story.

The Games

The games on the app include popular characters from Trolls, Chuggington, Spirit, Peppa Pig, and PJ Masks. Kids can solve puzzles, play with words and spelling, solve math problems, create artwork and more. I love the wide variety of educational opportunities available, and the various ways that the apps help kids practice important skills.

What My Daughter Thinks

My daughter loved that this app brought some of her favorite books to life. She liked touching the words in the books and having them read to her, as well as interacting with the illustrations to make them come to life. She is currently at a stage where she is exploring words and sounding them out, so the ability to touch the word and have it pronounced is a huge help to her. We read some of the books together, and I encouraged her to sound them out and then click on the words to double check.

She loves playing educational games, so she was thrilled with the wide variety available on the app. Since she loves doing puzzles and playing memory, she was excited that there were lots of opportunities to use her problem solving skills and memory skills. As kids do, she tends to want to play the same games or read the same books over and over again. But the huge amount of content gave her the opportunity to branch out and try new things as well.

Children’s Books with Educational Apps

Check out the interactive books from Little Grasshopper Books - a publishing company pairing children's books with educational apps! #interactivebooks #booksforkids #publishingcompanyMy daughter loves books and reading. But she also enjoys technology. I work hard to keep her screen time in check, but I also recognize that there are some benefits to giving her access to educational tools. Today we had the opportunity to check out books from a new publishing company that pairs children’s books with educational apps for kids, and encourages emerging readers to interact with books and play with text in a new way.

Read Hear & Play: 600 First Words

This boxed set of books includes 6 books which each feature 100 words in various themes: In Your Town, On the Farm, For Fun, On the Go, At School, and In Your House. Each word featured in the book is written in a large block font, and is accompanied by a bright, colorful picture. These are great books for introducing new words to emergent readers.

educational app for kids

The books pair with a downloadable app which offers 3 different options for interacting with the text. First, the app can read the text aloud, which helps kids with the pronunciation of each word. It also pairs each photograph with a fun sound effect, bringing the words to life for kids. The app also includes fun games for kids to play, using the images in the book. My daughter particularly enjoyed the matching game.

Mother Goose

This set of 12 small board books features beloved Mother Goose rhymes and sweet illustrations, all packaged in little books perfect for small hands. My daughter had a set of board books in a similar size when she was a baby and she adored carrying them around everywhere with her. These would easily fit into a purse or diaper bag for reading time on the go. Each book features a different rhyme, and adorable cartoon illustrations that tell the story.

These books also pair with the free downloadable app. Just like with the First Words books, the app interacts with the books in a variety of ways. The app can read the rhymes aloud, highlighting the words so emergent readers can read along with it. For very young kids, highlighting the words also teaches the concept that words come from the print on the page, which is an important pre-reading concept. The app also uses the illustrations to create fun learning games. Kids can play a memory game with the illustrations, or a matching game which encourages them to match the correct printed word with the illustration.
