Making Summer Treats with an American Girl Cookbook!

Make some delicious summer treats with this American Girl cookbook for kids! #cookbookforkids #cookingwithkids #summerrecipesWhen I was a kid, I read a ton of the American Girl books. My sister and I both had our favorites (I loved Molly, she loved Samantha), and we read the books, did the crafts, and put on the plays. I love that these books introduced readers to strong young girls and the historical time periods that they lived in, and I am really excited that my daughter has started showing interest in the American Girl stories. I have also been impressed over the years with their nonfiction books and their quest for teaching young girls all about themselves and what they can do. So we were thrilled when we were given the chance to check out their new Summer Treats American Girl cookbook!

American Girl Summer Treats is a colorful cookbook for kids, full of delicious and easy to create summer treats. As I have mentioned before, my daughter loves to cook and bake, and I love the learning opportunities that the kitchen provides. So we dove right in to this summery cookbook. The recipes are easy to follow, and accompanied by bright photographs, showing off the fun and delicious treats. There are recipes for summery cakes, fruit filled pastries, and icy treats perfect for those hot summer days.

Testing It Out

We decided to try the Fireworks Bundt Cake because it looked like a fun treat for Memorial Day and the 4th of July. (Plus I let my daughter choose and she really wanted to decorate with star sprinkles). The directions were easy for us to follow, and used ingredients that we mostly had on hand.

My daughter was able to help with a lot of the steps. She especially loved mixing the food coloring into the batter and swirling the different batters together. Since we only had a mini bundt pan, we poured some of the batters into the little pan, and put the rest into a springform pan.

I was a little worried about us mixing the colored batters too much and creating purple, so we didn’t do too much mixing, and the colors pretty much stayed in one layer. So next time, we will mix them a bit more to get the tie-dye effect. Either way, the cake was a huge hit with the family!

The Verdict

This cookbook is definitely a winner for us! It is full of so many delicious treats, using summer produce and sweet flavors to create snacks that everyone can enjoy. My daughter is already itching to create the Fruity Cake Tower or the Coconut-Mango-Strawberry Pops.

I can tell this book will definitely become one of her favorite cookbooks for kids, and that we will be doing lots of creating with it this summer. The back of the book includes information on all of the other cookbooks in the American Girl series, and I’m pretty sure those will be next on our to buy list!
