Celebrate the Olympic Spirit with Books on Winter Sports!

I love the Olympics. The world comes together to watch people fulfill their lifelong goals and cheer them on. The pride in representing your country, the beautiful routines and tricks being performed and the incredible range of emotions on display all make it a wonderful thing to share with your kids. With the 2018 Winter Olympics coming up, I figured this would be the perfect time to gather a list of books on winter sports that we will see in the coming weeks. Introduce your kids to all of the winter fun and maybe inspire them to chase their dreams as well!

Getting Through Winter with Frederick!

The long winter months can really start to get you down and make you miss the bright and sunshiny days of spring and summer. The story of Frederick by Leo Lionni combats these winter blues with bright colors and warm memories. It also shows kids how important art and poetry are to our lives, and how everyone can make a difference with their own individual talents.

The Snowy Day by Ezra Jack Keats is a classic story of a young boy enjoying all of the fun and wonder which accompany a fresh snowfall. What Do Snowmen Do at Night?

Snow has arrived where we live! We’ve been spending lots of time outside in the snow and trying to build snowmen. Each day our snowmen look a little different, which brings up the question addressed in today’s book!

Snowmen at Night by Caralyn and Mark Buehner is an entertaining tale about what happens to snowmen while we are sleeping at night. Do they stand there watching the street, or do they go on an adventure? The fun rhyming text is accompanied by adorable illustrations which make you want to join in the snowman fun! My daughter and I are big fans of Snowmen at Christmas, so I was excited to check out the other titles in this series! We have already had a lot of snow here and have had a lot of fun exploring it! Even if you don’t live in a snowy climate, there are lots of learning opportunities to go along with this adorable story!

Warming Hearts and Hands with The Mitten Tree

Winter has arrived where we live. It’s time to bundle up before we go outside and play in the beautiful and fluffy snow. Today’s book gave us a chance to have some fun with the mittens we will have to wear for the next few months!

The Mitten Tree┬áby Candace Christiansen tells the touching story of Sarah, a little old woman who watches the young children play at the bus stop, but goes unnoticed by them. After a snow fall, she notices that one of the boys doesn’t play with the other kids. When she sees that he doesn’t have any mittens, she decides to knit him a pair. She leaves them on the spruce tree, thus beginning a fun game with the children. Each day they look on the mitten tree for pairs of mittens. This is a sweet story which children and adults can enjoy, while also giving readers a great message about the act of giving, without needing recognition for it.
