Not a day goes by that we are not dancing around the house to one song or another. I’m sure she gets it from me, since I am usually dancing while I cook, wait in line, or drive the car. To feed our love of dance and movement, I decided to gather some of our favorite  children’s books about dancing. I hope your little dancers enjoy them as well!

I Love My Tutu Too!

Written by Ross Burach

This adorable counting board book uses fun rhymes and cute animal illustrations to show kids how to count to ten. The book starts with one little penguin dancing in a pink tutu. He is soon joined by creatures both big and small, dressed in their own frilly tutus. The vibrantly colored illustrations, peppy rhymes, and adorable characters will have kids wanting to count and dance along.

Flamingo Flamenco

Written by Brooke Jorden and illustrated by Alex Zhdanov

This fun board book highlights a variety of dance styles using short rhymes and a repeated refrain. The illustrations feature various animals each excelling at their own dances, while the flamingo does the flamenco on every other page. Each style of dance has it’s own costumes, adorably fitted to the animals performing it. In the end, each type of dance is celebrated as the text urges readers to dance with all of their heart.

ABC Dance! An Animal Alphabet

Written by Sabrina Moyle and illustrated by Eunice Moyle

This brightly colored board book from HelloLucky pairs each letter of the alphabet with a group of animals and a style of dancing. The fun illustrations show each type of animal dressed in appropriate clothing for their chosen dance style, and the happy looks on their faces will have kids itching to get up and move just like them. This is a fun way to review the alphabet, as well as a great introduction to various forms of dance.

How Do You Dance?

Written by Thyra Heder

This book is a celebration of all the different ways that you can move your body and express yourself through dance. Throughout the book, one child does not want to dance. The text aims to show all of the ways that people can dance, and how easy it can be. The illustrations show a diverse group of characters all dancing in their own way, and even includes a chart of dance moves for the reader to try. Kids will love trying all of the different moves highlighted in the book, and will appreciate the message that they can dance any way and anywhere that they want to.

Bear Moves

Written by Ben Bailey Smith and Sav Akyuz

This sequel to I Am Bear revisits the bright purple bear as he tries out all of his favorite dance moves. The rhyming text has a peppy beat to it, while the hilarious illustrations show the brightly colored bear performing all kinds of dances, usually in silly costumes. The illustrations are incredibly vibrant, with neon colors and silly characters that will have kids laughing out loud. They may just want to try out Bear’s moves for themselves.

Giraffes Can’t Dance

Written by Giles Andreae and illustrated by Guy Parker-Rees

Gerald the giraffe just wants to dance. But his long legs and crooked knees make it hard for him to move like he wants to. When the other animals laugh at him, he wanders away and finds help in the form of a friendly cricket who tells him that everyone can dance when they find their own music. The story is paired with adorable illustrations of the sweet giraffe character and his jungle friends. This is a great story of self esteem, encouraging kids to dance to the beat of their own drums.
