Miguel’s Community Garden

Written by JaNay Brown-Wood and illustrated by Samara Hardy

This adorable trip through a garden asks readers to help Miguel find the sunflowers in his garden. It starts by reviewing the things that we know about sunflowers, then asks if each newly discovered plant is a sunflower. Kids will love learning about the different plants in the fictional garden, and working out whether each plant is what Miguel is looking for. The colorful illustrations are full of details, and the back of the book includes a recipe for Sunflower Seed Salad.

I Love Strawberries!

Written by Shannon Anderson and illustrated by Jaclyn Sinquett

Jolie is a young girl who loves strawberries. So she decides that she wants to try growing her own. As she learns how to grow strawberries and harvest them, she keeps a record in her journal, the pages of which are highlighted in the top corner of each page. Kids will love watching this journey from seed to fruit, as well as the hilarious commentary and discoveries made by Jolie. Nana’s Garden

Written by Larissa Juliano and illustrated by Francesca De Luca

This adorable board book follows a young girl as she spends a day gardening with her grandparents. As they check out different flowers, fruits, and vegetables, the text highlights all the colors of the rainbow, and reviews counting items up to 5 as well. Kids will love reviewing colors and numbers in the book, as well as the sweet story of a day spent with grandparents.

In Our Garden

Written by Pat Zietlow Miller and illustrated by Melissa Crowton

Millie is a young girl who is feeling homesick in her new “gray” home. When she sees the roof of the school is perfect for a rooftop garden, she inspires everyone to pitch in and add some green to their world. Kids will love watching the whole community come together to create a garden full of colorful flowers and delicious vegetables.

No Nibbling!

Written by Beth Ferry and illustrated by A.N. Kang

In this hilarious pun-filled story, a goat named Derwood is tending to his garden when he comes across a rabbit named Tabitha. Derwood is convinced that Tabitha wants to nibble on his garden, but she keeps distracting him with her vegetable puns. In the end, they strike up an unlikely friendship, and enjoy some delicious vegetables together. Kids will love the silly puns throughout the book.

This beautiful nonfiction book introduces kids to seeds and how they grow. The beginning of the book introduces vocabulary words the reader will need throughout the text, and the back of the book includes an index and resources for further learning. Throughout the book, the text uses colorful fonts and question and answer formatting to keep kids engaged. The accompanying illustrations are clear and detailed and full of bright colors, drawing the reader into the tiniest details that most people miss.

Seeds

Written by Carme Lemniscates

This book dives into the remarkable potential hidden inside of tiny seeds. The simple text shares how seeds travel, grow, and transform, and how humans and insects interact with them. It also touches on the seeds of kindness and resentment and how we get to choose which seeds we cultivate. Kids will love the simple story and the cute cartoon illustrations.

Little Dandelion Seeds the World

Apple and Magnolia

Written by Laura Gehl and illustrated by Patricia Metola

This sweet book follows a young girl named Britta who loves to spend time with her two favorite trees: Apple and Magnolia. She is sure they are best friends, so when the Magnolia tree starts to droop, she does everything she can to bring the two trees together. Despite some people telling her that one tree can’t save another, Britta is sure that their friendship can save the day. The sweet story is accompanied by striking illustrations that highlight the child’s view of the trees.

Trees Make Perfect Pets

Written by Paul Czajak and illustrated by Cathy Gendron

Abigail is a young girl who wants a pet of her own. But she doesn’t want a dog, or a bird, or a hamster. She wants a tree. When her parents agree to give her a tree, she names it Fido and helps it to grow. She feeds Fido, takes him for walks, and cuddles with him, and defends her choice of Fido as a pet. In the end, she has to plant Fido outside and trust that he will do well on his own. Kids will love the way that Abigail takes care of her tree just like any other pet, as well as the sweet ending of the story.

Growing Pains

Written by Alison McLennan and illustrated by Melissa Johns

In this cute story, a young boy named Finn worries about the tree that his parents planted behind their house. Is the tree cold or hungry? Does it feel scared or have growing pains like Finn does? As he does his best to care for the tree, he may also learn some important lessons from it. The illustrations are full of fun details, using different textures and styles of paper to bring the scenes to life.
