Kid’s Books about Bravery

Cannonball

Written by Sacha Cotter and illustrated by Josh Morgan

In this colorful book, a young boy wants to do a perfect cannonball. He learns from his Nan and thinks he’s all ready, but he can’t do it. Everyone around him starts giving him advice, and he tries to take all of it, but it still doesn’t work. In the end he decides to be true to himself. He bundles up all of the courage and bravery inside of him to make his dreams come true. The text dips in and out of rhyming, and the back of the book includes a glossary defining the different dives in the book, and the Maori words used throughout. The illustrations are busy and brightly colored, and full of funny details that will have kids laughing out loud and cheering for the main character.

Two Tough Trucks Get Lost

Written by Corey Rosen Schwartz and Rebecca J. Gomez and illustrated by Hilary Leung

This follow up to Two Tough Trucks, follows Mack and Rig as they get caught up racing one another, and wind up lost. They have to dig deep and find the courage to navigate the scary desert in the dark in order to find one another and get home. The rhyming text is full of fun noises made by the truck characters, while the illustrations use dark colors to highlight the scariness of the desert at night. Kids will love cheering for the lost trucks and seeing them face their fears to get back to one another.

Don’t Worry Little Crab

Written by Chris Haughton

This story follows Little Crab as he follows Very Big Crab out of their little tide pool and to the ocean. Little Crab is frightened to leave their home and face the enormous waves of the ocean, and he keeps trying to turn back. But Very Big Crab helps him to find his courage deep inside, and face his fears. The text is full of fun sounds and action words that kids will love reading out loud, and the bold illustrations use sharp shapes and vibrant colors to bring the story to life.

Norman: One Amazing Goldfish

Written by Kelly Bennett and illustrated by Noah Z. Jones

This sequel to Not Norman: A Goldfish Story follows a young boy and his pet goldfish, Norman, as they head to the Pet-O-Rama talent show. The young boy knows that Norman can blow everyone away with his tricks. But when the big night comes, Norman gets stage fright and freezes up. Together, they are able to overcome their stage fright and perform their act together. The illustrations are vibrantly colored, and they highlight the intense emotions between the young boy and his pet fish. Kids will be cheering for the two to be brave and overcome their fears together.

Acoustic Rooster’s Barnyard Boogie

Written by Kwame Alexander and illustrated by Tim Bowers

This funny and sweet story based on the Kennedy Center Musical follows a young girl named Indigo Blume as she faces her fears of singing out loud. The Garden City Community Festival is coming up, and Indigo Blume is afraid to sing in front of the whole community. When she falls asleep after hearing her favorite story “Acoustic Rooster and His Barnyard Band”, she finds herself on the farm with the characters from the book. When the band needs help to save their home, Indigo has to be brave and face her fears. Kids will love the silly characters and illustrations, while adults will appreciate the characters based on real musicians.

Willow the Armadillo

Written by Marilou Reeder and illustrated by Dave Mottram

Willow is an armadillo who loves reading picture books. She wants to be the hero in her own picture book. So she studies at the Picture Book Academy and attends Picture Book Hero tryouts. After a pile of rejections, Willow is worried she will never be a hero. But when there is a crisis at the library, she has the opportunity to dig deep and show her bravery in order to become a hero in real life. The illustrations are full of adorable animal characters, and kids will love cheering on the determined little armadillo.

Do Not Go In There

Written by Ariel Horn and illustrated by Izzy Burton

Morton and Bogart are best friends who sometimes disagree. When they come across a closed door, Morton wants to find out what is on the other side, but Bogart does not. For every scary thing that Bogart dreams up behind the door, Morton counters it with something fun and sparkly. As they argue about whether or not they should open the door, Morton’s enthusiasm and optimism helps Bogart to face his fears and be brave. The illustrations are full of imaginative scenarios, and the cliffhanger ending will encourage the reader to use their own imagination to finish the story.

Courageous Lucy: The Girl Who Liked to Worry

Written by Paul Russell and illustrated by Cara King

This story follows a young girl named Lucy who wants to be in the school musical. But her constant worrying makes it hard for her to get involved. When she finally speaks up, her teacher is able to find a perfect role for her. Even though she is still worried about all kinds of things, she is able to face her fears and be brave, if only for a little bit. This is a great story for kids who worry a lot, as it shows that worrying doesn’t mean that they can’t be brave and step out of their shell sometimes.
