We always finish our reading with a soothing bedtime book to help ease into sleep. So I’m always happy to find new bedtime stories that we can add to our rotation. This list includes some of the latest bedtime books for kids that we are enjoying!

Good Night Baboon!

Written by Sabrina Moyle and illustrated by Eunice Moyle

This brightly colored board book from HelloLucky is a fun bedtime counting book told through a peppy rhyming pattern. As the text counts down from 10 to 1, the story visits lots of animals as they prepare for bed, but one little baboon just isn’t ready for bed yet. The text uses lots of funny noises, and the illustrations are full of silly situations that will have kids laughing out loud. But the story ends in a sweet way, with an important bit of advice before bed too!

Goodnight, Sleepyville

Written by Blake Liliane Hellman and illustrated by Steven Henry

This adorable book takes readers to Sleepyville, where tons of animals are preparing for bed. The text follows the animals in Sleepyville as they wind down for the day and take part in familiar evening and bedtime routines. Kids will love seeing the adorable animal characters doing the same things before bed that they do. And the sweet ending will be familiar to kids who aren’t quite ready for sleep yet.

Over in the Woodland

Written by Nicole & Shar Abreu and illustrated by Susanna Covelli

This mythological counting book is based on the children’s rhyme “Over in the Meadow”. The peppy rhyming text follows a pride of griffins as they guard and protect the mythical creatures in the Woodland. The text counts up from 1 to 10, while the beautiful illustrations bring the mythological creatures to life. There is a baby griffin hidden in each illustration, and the back of the book includes a glossary of the creatures featured in the the story.

Good Night, My Love

Written and illustrated by Debbie Bryant

This fun counting bedtime story starts with a young child who isn’t ready for bed yet. So the child’s mother starts telling a story that counts down from 10 to 1, featuring different groups of animals getting ready for bed. Kids will love seeing animals taking part in the same familiar bedtime routines that they do, and the rhythmic text and sweet ending will help them to drift off to sleep. Tiny T. Rex and the Very Dark Dark

Written by Jonathan Stutzman and illustrated by Jay Fleck

In this follow up to Tiny T. Rex and the Impossible Hug, Tiny T. Rex and his friend Pointy are planning their first campout. But they are both afraid of the dark. Together, they try their best to come up with plans to feel braver. But when their plan goes awry, they learn to find some light in the darkness. Kids will love these adorable dinosaur characters, and the fact that they struggle with the same fear of the dark that many children do.

Dream Big, Little Scientists

Written by Michelle Schaub and illustrated by Alice Potter

This adorable bedtime story for little science lovers visits the bedrooms of 12 little kids who each love their own branch of science. The rhyming text and engaging illustrations each contain hints at the branch of science that each child enjoys. Kids will enjoy searching for clues in the detailed illustrations, which include portraits of famous scientists from each area of expertise. The back of the book includes a table that explains each branch of science featured in the book, as well as resources for further learning.

How to Put an Octopus to Bed

Written by Sherri Duskey Rinker and illustrated by Viviane Schwarz

This bedtime story by the author of Goodnight, Goodnight, Construction Site, follows an octopus family getting ready for bed. When bedtime rolls around, the little octopus takes it upon himself to prepare his parents for bed. As the family all prepares for nighttime, silliness ensues. The peppy rhyming text and colorful illustrations will have kids laughing along, especially as the little octopus succeeds in putting his parents to bed first.
