If You’re Scary and You Know It!

Written by Carole Gerber and illustrated by Noel Ill

This seasonal spin on the children’s song “If You’re Happy and You Know It” is full of adorable kids dressed up for Halloween. The peppy rhyming text just begs to be sung aloud. Each page focuses on a different Halloween costume, and introduces different Halloween symbols and spooky adjectives. The bright illustrations will keep young ones entertained, and they will love acting out the different costumes.

Monsters Come Out Tonight!

Written by Frederick Glasser and illustrated by Edward Miller

This vibrantly colored board book is full of flaps for kids to open and uncover different Halloween beings inside. The rhyming text hints at the character behind the flap, and the repeated refrain “come out tonight” will have kids cheering along. Even the scariest characters in the book are illustrated with friendly faces, and the cheerful ending will make kids want to read this every Halloween.

Where’s the Witch?

Illustrated by Ingela P. Arrhenius

This colorful board book is full of felt flaps, hiding different Halloween characters for kids to find. The simple text asks where each character is, encouraging kids to uncover them on the opposite page. The last page asks where the reader is, and the felt ghost is covering a small mirror. Very young readers will love lifting the soft flaps and finally finding themselves on the last page.

Pick a Pumpkin

Written by Patricia Toht and illustrated by Jarvis

This lyrical picture book follows a group of children as they head to a pumpkin patch for a day of fall fun. The rhyming text uses descriptive language to explore the sights, sounds, and flavors of the fall season. The illustrations use a color palette full of earth tone colors and diverse characters to show the fun of visiting a pumpkin patch and carving jack-o-lanterns. You will definitely want to go hunting for pumpkins after reading this one!

The Right One for Roderic

Written and illustrated by Violeta Noy

This colorful book follows a small ghost named Roderic who decides that he wants to be different. He doesn’t want to wear a plain white sheet anymore. So he dresses up in all kinds of different outfits until he finds something that makes him feel better.. The story celebrates the idea of standing out and being comfortable being yourself. The illustrations are full of bright colors, and kids will love the different outfits that Roderic tries to wear.

Give Me Back My Bones!

Written by Kim Norman and illustrated by Bob Kolar

This rhyming book explores the bones of the body through the voice of a skeleton scattered at the bottom of the sea. The text is peppy and flows quickly, giving examples of what each bone does or how it connects. The illustrations are full of lots of fun details. Each page shows a different bone hidden in the pictures, and the skeleton puts himself together as he finds new bones.

Mother Ghost: Nursery Rhymes for Little Monsters

Written by Rachel Kolar and illustrated by Roland Garrigue

In this Halloween themed anthology, classic nursery rhymes are given a fun spooky twist. Each two page spread focuses on a familiar rhyme, but changes the words to include Halloween imagery and creepy surprises. The accompanying illustrations use a predominantly black, purple and white color palette to give the whole book a spooky feel. Kids will love the silly rhymes and will be repeating them all season long!

Ghoulia

Written by Barbara Cantini

This illustrated chapter book follows a young zombie named Ghoulia who lives in a haunted manor. She wants to be like other girls and make friends with the other kids that live nearby, but her Aunt is afraid that she will scare them away. When Halloween night rolls around, Ghoulia comes up with a plan to blend in with the trick or treaters and meet some new friends.

The story has a very sweet ending that shows that being yourself is the best way to make friends, while the illustrations steal the show with incredible details and beautiful scenery. The back of the book also includes tips for dressing as Ghoulia, as well as recipes for Halloween treats. The second book in the series, Ghoulia and the Mysterious Visitor is now available too, just in time for Halloween!
