So I am always excited to find new bilingual books for kids that help us explore different languages in fun new ways. This list of children’s bilingual books explore simple vocabulary with fun illustrations and easy text.

Babies Around the World*

Written by Puck and illustrated by Violet Lemay

This colorful board book introduces the reader to different greetings from around the world. The simple text shares different ways that people say hello, with the English translations beneath them. The adorable illustrations feature smiling babies in recognizable settings around the world. Kids and parents will enjoy exploring the detailed backgrounds of each country, while also learning new greetings.

Kandi and the Fox*

Written by Raynelda Calderon and illustrated by Donna Wiscombe

This bilingual story follows a little squirrel as she ventures into the forest to visit her friend. When she is confronted by a fierce fox, she must figure out a way to get past him. Once she is in the company of her friend, they celebrate her creativity and braveness, and make plans to learn more about the fox for the future. The simple text is written in both English and Spanish, and the adorable illustrations feature brightly colored animals and soothing backgrounds.

Fire! Fuego! Brave Bomberos

Written by Susan Middleton Elya and illustrated by Dan Santat

Join a group of firefighters as they work together to fight a house fire. The rhyming text is full of Spanish words, woven seamlessly into the story. They are highlighted in a bold font and are also included in a glossary in the back of the book. The illustrations use vibrant oranges, yellows and reds, and they show the wide range of emotions from both the firefighters and the community.

One Is a PiƱata: A Book of Numbers*

Written by Roseanne Greenfield Thong and illustrated by John Parra

This fun rhyming book introduces kids to numbers in English and Spanish, as well as Spanish vocabulary words. The rhyming text explores different cultural symbols, while the illustrations feature a cast of happy people celebrating, playing, and enjoying life. The numbers are shown in numerical form, along with both the English and Spanish words. The back of the book also includes a glossary of the Spanish words, with detailed explanations of each.

12 Lucky Animals: A Bilingual Baby Book*

Written by Vickie Lee and illustrated by Joey Chou

This brightly colored board book introduces the reader to the animals of the Chinese zodiac. Each two page spread features an adorable illustration of a featured animal. The animal name is written in both English and Chinese, and the text includes a pronunciation guide. The characteristics attributed to each animal are also listed below. The illustrations are full of bright colors and smiling animals, making them very engaging for young readers. The back cover includes the years associated with each animal, so readers can easily find out which animal represents their year of birth.

Lets Learn Japanese: First Words for Everyone*

Written by Aurora Cacciapuoti

This introduction to the Japanese language explores the basics of the language, and introduces the reader to lots of vocabulary. The beginning of the book breaks down the language and explains the different writing systems. The rest of the book is organized into different categories, ranging from foods and colors to travel and school related words. Each vocabulary word is shown in illustrated form, and each one is labeled in English, as well as 3 different Japanese styles. This is not only a fun way to introduce little ones to the language, but can also be helpful to adults who are interested in the language.

Nita’s First Signs*

Written by Kathy MacMillan and illustrated by Sara Brezzi

This interactive board book is a great way to share American Sign Language with your children. The simple story follows a young baby named Nita as she and her parents interact and communicate with signs. The illustrations are brightly colored, and the simple text incorporates common words that parents and children frequently use. The pages of the book can be pulled out to reveal instructions on how to make the sign featured on the page. This is a fun book to read together, with the interactive elements and sweet story, but it is also a great way to introduce ASL to little ones.
