LOOK! Books Nonfiction Books for Kids

To start my series on nonfiction texts for kids, I wanted to share two different sets of books by Red Chair Press. This publishing company has released more than 200 fiction and nonfiction books that aim to support character development, social-emotional development and academic development in kids of all ages. Their LOOK! Books are curriculum aligned nonfiction books that are a great introduction to nonfiction texts for kindergarten to grade 2. We had the opportunity to check out two sets of their LOOK! Books: Nature is All Around Me by Jennifer Marino Walters and Animals That Help Us by Alice Boynton and Wiley Blevins.

Learning about Animals That Help Us

The Animals That Help Us series was written by Alice Boynton and Wiley Blevins. This series of books introduces the reader to all kinds of working animals with important jobs. The text explores some of the impressive skills that these animals have, and some of the remarkable tasks that they can accomplish for people who need their help.

There are 6 books in the series:

Learning in Nature

The Learning in Nature series was written by Jennifer Marino Walters. This series introduces basic concepts in nature, and allows kids to compare and contrast while exploring the world around them. The text is full of interesting facts and questions for the reader to think about and respond to. The impressive photography shows incredible details and vibrant colors to draw the reader in.

There are 4 books in this series:

Introducing Nonfiction Text Features

The text is easy to read, with important vocabulary highlighted in bold and defined in the back of the book. There are also pronunciations for some words included in the text. Each book also includes a table of contents, an index, a glossary, and additional resources for further learning. There are also interesting facts placed throughout the books, providing additional learning for kids interested in the subject matter.

It is important to highlight these features for kids, as they learn more about nonfiction texts and how to use them. The clean layout of these books makes it easy to show kids how to use a table of contents or index to find the information they are looking for. The use of bold text and brightly colored fonts highlight the vocabulary scattered throughout the books, and the glossary in the back is easy for kids to use.
