The Little Mouse, The Red Ripe Strawberry, and The Big Hungry Bear by Dan and Audrey Wood is a beautifully illustrated story of a little mouse who finds a delicious strawberry. The narrator tells the mouse that there is a hungry bear that loves freshly picked strawberries, so the mouse decides to try and hide the fruit from the bear. This results in some entertaining ideas by the mouse which will surely have kids laughing. In the end, the mouse and the narrator share the strawberry. This is a sweet story that can be used in many fun ways!

Hide the Strawberry – Cut a strawberry out of paper or use a toy strawberry and hide it somewhere in the house. Let your kids be hungry bears who have to search high and low to find the delicious strawberry! The bear who finds it gets to hide it the next time. This is a great game for staying inside on rainy or cold days!

My daughter’s strawberry handprint

Strawberry Handprint – Paint a strawberry shape on paper or cut it out of red paper. Trace your child’s handprint and wrist on green paper to create the leaves and the stem. Have kids use black paint to finger paint seeds on the strawberry shape. Attach the stem to the top of the strawberry. My daughter had a lot of fun using a paintbrush to paint her seeds.

Make something delicious with red ripe strawberries!

Make Strawberry Treats – There are a lot of delicious strawberry treats that you can easily make with kids. For an easy and healthy snack, slice strawberries, dip them in yogurt and freeze them on a baking sheet. You could also make strawberry mice by cutting strawberries in half, inserting little almond slice or chocolate wafer ears and a face piped out of melted chocolate or frosting. Licorice ropes make good tails as well! Serving these up with bits of cheese makes for a fun and healthy snack!

Strawberry Scissor Practice – The blog Reading Confetti came up with a great idea to practice using scissors and improve fine motor skills with this book. Since the mouse cuts the strawberry in two, she created strawberries that her kids could cut in half. Cut strawberry shapes out of red paper and draw various lines down the center in zig zag or wavy lines. Have kids cut the strawberry down the line.

Strawberry Math – Cut strawberry shapes and stems out of paper, or draw them out on paper. Gather a collection of black buttons. Write a number on the stem of the strawberry and have kids count out the right number of “seeds” or black buttons to add to the strawberry. This works on counting and fine motor skills!

Did your kids enjoy the story? Do you have any strawberry snacks that would go great with this book? Let me know in the comments!

  1. It sounds like a really cute story! I love all of your ideas of what to do after reading the story. Learning how to cut different shapes and lines is really important for kindergarten and beyond.

    • The illustrations in this book are big and beautiful, so it will probably capture the attention of a 6 month old!

  2. I love finding new books for my kids and when they have craft ideas that go along with them, it is even better! Thanks for sharing! 🙂

  3. I love some kid humor in a great picture book. This one sounds really interesting and I’ll have to check it out! I also love the activities you come up with to go along with the stories you read.

  4. Strawberry shortcake is my favorite snack! Just bake some biscuits, cut stems off strawberries and than cut strawberries in half, put in a bowl, add sugar. Once biscuits are done, mash the strawberry/sugar mixture. Stuff strawberries inside and on top of biscuit. And finish off with whipped cream.

  5. Love this book so much! So do my kiddos! These activities that you mentioned will be so fun to do along with the book to extend their learning! Great ideas!

  6. I already love this book, but I think I love it more with all of the activities you mentioned! It shows how much fun reading and literacy can be! I will be doing ALL of these activities!
