As election ads take over the airwaves, and signs pop up all around us, kids may have lots of questions about the voting process. This list of election books for kids are a great way to introduce them to the process of voting.

Written by Eleanor Roosevelt, with updates by Michelle Markel and new illustrations by Grace Lin

Originally published in 1932, this guide to citizenship and government teaches the reader about the design of our government. From firefighters and police officers to judges and senators, this book discusses all levels of government. The text is divided up into simple chapters with colorful illustrations and diagrams placed throughout the book. This is a great resource for teaching kids about the set up of the United States government, so they understand what we are voting for.

Vote For Me!: How Governments and Elections Work Around the World*

Written by Louise Spilsbury and illustrated by Mike Gordon

This illustrated guide introduces kids to types of government all over the world. The book is divided into sections, and is full of colorful illustrations, making the information easy to sort through. There is lots of information about elections, as well as the importance of voting. The back of the book also includes a glossary of important terms, and a list of resources for further research.

Written by Eileen Christelow

This introduction to elections follows a pair of dogs as they attend a rally and learn about voting. The text easily explains the concepts of voting and elections, and the colorful cartoon style illustrations and adorable dog characters are sure to entertain young readers.

 


Lillian’s Right to Vote: A Celebration of the Voting Rights Act of 1965

Written by Jonah Winter and illustrated by Shane W. Evans

Lillian is an African American woman who is 100 years old. As she makes the long trek to cast her vote, she sees years of history around her, and the struggles of her ancestors to get the right to vote. This moving story pays tribute to those that fought for the right to vote, and reminds us why it is important to exercise that right and be grateful for it. The illustrations do a great job of showing Lillian’s trek in the present, alongside the visions of her ancestors.


One Vote, Two Votes, I Vote, You Vote

Written by Bonnie Worth and illustrated by Aristides Ruiz and Joe Mathieu

This peppy rhyming book follows Dr. Seuss’ Cat in the Hat as he explains elections, voting, political parties, and more. The text is full of important information introduced in a flowing rhyme scheme and accompanied by fun illustrations.

Written by Ruby Shamir and illustrated by Matt Faulkner

This informative book explains elections and voting through fun facts and historical events and trivia. There is a lot of text, full of lots of interesting tidbits, and the illustrations are incredibly detailed as well.

Written by Doreen Cronin and illustrated by Betsy Lewin

The troublesome duck from Click, Clack, Moo is back in this election themed story. When Duck realizes that he doesn’t want to do chores anymore, he decides to hold an election to replace Farmer Brown. However, when he gets the job, he decides it’s too much work, and runs for governor instead. This hilarious election story is full of little jokes that parents can enjoy as well.


If I Ran For President

Written by Catherine Stier and illustrated by Lynne Avril

This book follows six kids as they explain what would happen if they decided to run for president. Through engaging text and vibrant cartoon illustrations, the multiple narrators introduce readers to every step of the election process, from declaring candidacy, through primaries and Election Day.

Written by Herman Parish and illustrated by Lynne Avril

This story follows a young Amelia Bedelia as she and her classmates are encouraged by the principal to vote for new school rules. The fun story explains some of the concepts of elections, including absentee ballots. Kids will love Amelia Bedelia’s funny mistakes, as well as the fun and colorful illustrations.


Grace for President

Written by Kelly DiPucchio and illustrated by LeUyen Pham

When Grace learns from her teacher that there has never been a female president of the United States, she decides that she will be the first. This story follows the election process as Grace and her classmate Thomas run against each other in a mock election. Each student is assigned a state, allowing the classes to act out the process of electing by electoral college. This is a great introduction to the electoral college, with an engaging story and vibrant and fun illustrations.

Written by Kay Winters and illustrated by Denise Brunkus

Oliver is a young boy who believes that his teacher would be perfect for the job of president. He outlines all of the ways his teacher is a great fit for the job, many of which will entertain adult readers as well. The text is simple, with fun illustrations showing some of the jobs that a President has.
