The election will be here before you know it. It will offer lots of opportunities to talk to kids about presidents, what they do, and the ones who have come before. So we are thrilled to share these fun president books for kids. They may inspire kids to raise their own voices and change the world on their own. Plus, we paired them with a fun writing activity to get kids thinking about what they want in a president.

Future President

Written by Lori Alexander and illustrated by Allison Black

This adorable board book compares the actions and the responsibilities of the President with the actions of babies to show that they could someday be President too. The colorful illustrations feature a diverse cast of babies wearing adorable USA themed clothing. Each image shows a baby doing the same things that Presidents do, but in their own cute way. The back of the book includes fun facts about the President and the jobs and responsibilities of the office in text that young kids can understand.

Sofia Valdez, Future Prez

Written by Andrea Beaty and illustrated by David Roberts

Sofia Valdez is a young girl who does everything she can to help her neighborhood and the people living in it. When she and her Abuelo come across a dangerous landfill and her Abuelo gets hurt, she decides that something must be done about it. She heads to City Hall to make her case, and lets her voice be heard, even when people doubt her. The rhyming text highlights the ability of one little girl to stand up and make a difference, and the colorful illustrations feature a diverse cast of characters, including a visit from popular characters Rosie Revere, Iggy Peck, and Ada Twist!

The Next President

Written by Kate Messner and illustrated by Adam Rex

This informative book teaches kids about past US presidents with an interesting twist. The author takes the reader on a trip through history, introducing them to past presidents, as well as the whereabouts of future presidents at the time. For example, when George Washington became president, there were nine future presidents already alive. Each president has a little blurb exploring where they came from. The illustrations show them as kids, teenagers, or adults before taking office. The end of the book asks the reader to imagine where the next president is and what they could be doing right now. This is a fun way to inspire kids to look toward the future and dream about becoming president themselves.

If I Were President

This printable booklet encourages kids to think about what it takes to be president, and what they would do if they were in charge. What would be the biggest issue they wanted to tackle? What do they think needs to be changed? My daughter loved writing in this booklet, and she was so excited to create her own book. After printing the pages, I cut them in half and stapled them together to create a book for her. We filled in a page every day, and she blew me away with her insight and her answers. Most of her goals had to do with the pandemic and fighting coronavirus, and I was really touched by some of her ideas.

The questions in the booklet ask kids to consider the state of the country, and the things that they want to be different. They also let them dream big and be creative. Let kids stretch their imaginations and have fun with it. You may discover that they have some pretty great ideas!
