New Interactive Board Books

Encourage young readers with these interactive board books!Interactive books are a great way to get kids interested in reading. For little ones, the ability to touch, move, and interact with the story and the physical book can help to keep their interest and involve them in the read aloud process. This list of new interactive board books includes lots of colorful and funny books that little readers will enjoy.

Nita’s Day

Written by Kathy MacMillan and illustrated by Sara Brezzi

This sequel to Nita’s First Signs introduces kids to more ASL signs through a cute story and colorful illustrations. Each page follows Nita and her parents as they go about their daily life. The tabs along the edge of the book highlight the signs used on each page. Pulling the tab out of the book uncovers illustrated instructions for making the sign. Each of the signs in this book can be used every day, improving the chances that kids will remember them.

Farm Block

Written by Christopher Franceschelli and illustrated by Peskimo

This large board book explores life on the farm through easy to read text and fold out illustrations. The strong pages feature shaped edges and cut outs to engage the reader and draw them from one part of farm life to the next. This book is full of information for kids about farm life, and they will love finding new things in the fold out illustrations every time they read it.

Disney Block

Written by Peskimo

This big board book uses adorable illustrations, shaped pages and quotes to introduce kids to Disney movies. Each two page spread features part of a movie quote and familiar illustrated scenes from popular animated Disney movies. We loved exploring some of our favorite Disney movies. But our favorite parts were the hidden Disney “Easter eggs” hidden throughout the book. Each two page spread includes at least one hidden Mickey, and the final two page spread includes so many hidden movie references, that I’m still not sure we got them all!

Make Me a Monster

Written by Mark Rogalski

This brightly colored book uses rhyming text and colorful flaps to create a monster out of the rectangular book. As the reader flips each page, the book asks if it is a monster. The shaped flaps on each page can be folded out, adding eyes, teeth, wings and more to the shape of the book. When the story is finished, the whole book is transformed into a monster. This has become one of my daughter’s new favorites.

I Love You, Elephant!

Illustrated by Carles Ballesteros

This sweet book follows an adorable monkey as he tells all of his animal friends what he loves about them. Each turn of the page changes the face of the animal that the monkey is talking to. The shifting faces will draw kids into the story, and the sweet ending reminds the reader that they are loved for exactly who they are.

Physics Animated

Written by Tyler Jordan and illustrated by Elsa Martins

This book is a fun way for little ones to explore scientific concepts. The text introduces kids to Sir Isaac Newton and his three laws, and defines other physics concepts. Each page features a brightly colored heading, a simple definition of the theory or concept, and an interactive illustration that highlights the action described on the page. Some of the concepts covered include centripetal force, friction, and buoyancy. This is a great way to give kids a visual for scientific concepts.

Clothes

Written by Rilla Alexander

This board book introduces kids to vocabulary having to do with clothes. Each two page spread features a large raised word highlighting a different area of clothing. One of the illustrations on each page has raised and lowered sections, making it interesting for kids to feel and explore. The rest of the page includes colorful illustrations of other pieces of clothing, and more vocabulary related to the theme of the page. This is a fun way for kids to explore clothing and dressing vocabulary.

The Kids on the Bus

Written by Kristen Hall and illustrated by Melissa Crowton

This shaped board book puts a fun spin on the popular children’s song “The Wheels on the Bus” by highlighting emotions. Each turn of the page adds new animal characters to the bus, each showing different emotions. The side of the book has a cardboard wheel that the reader can spin to change the emotions shown at the front of the bus. This offers kids a chance to explore emotional vocabulary and pair the correct emotions to the feelings in the scene.

Fun at the Fair

Written by Ingela P. Arrhenius

This small shaped board book explores the different rides and attractions at the fair. The shaped pages each highlight a different attraction, and the simple text introduces lots of action words.

Baby Goat: Finger Puppet Book

Illustrated by Yu-Hsuan Huang

This tiny board book follows a little baby goat throughout a day, as she eats, plays, and visits with friends. The colorful illustrations feature cute animal characters, and each page includes a hole cutout for the soft finger puppet head to poke through from the back. The little finger puppet brings the illustrations to life for little ones, and they will love sticking their own fingers into the puppet too.
