Learning to Eat Veggies with the Veggie Buds Club!

making vegetables fun for kidsI will be the first to admit that I was a very picky eater as a kid. (Sorry Mom and Dad!). I have gotten a lot better about trying new foods, but I have a hard time making my daughter try new things when I am not the best at it. Lucky for me, she is a bit more open to trying new things. However, like most kids, she isn’t always happy about vegetables. So I was thrilled when we had the opportunity to work with the Veggie Buds Club and learn fun new ways to get excited about vegetables!

Veggie Buds Club is a subscription box that focuses on a new vegetable every month. Each month, kids receive a box in the mail full of learning activities and special goodies, encouraging them to get excited about a certain vegetable. The activities include coloring pages, crafts, games, cooking activities, and growing projects; working on several important skills, while getting them familiar with the vegetable. Members of the Veggie Buds Super Club also receive a themed children’s book and collectible felt toy. We had the opportunity to check out the Veggie Buds Super Club boxes for Beans and Radishes.

Making Vegetables Fun For Kids

I was so impressed with all of the goodies stuffed into our subscription box! Each activity is separated out into labeled bags with all the pieces included. The different bags are each labeled with different ways for kids to interact with the vegetable (Grow, Create, Cook, Learn, etc). The coloring pages and learning activities were easy to set up and play. They allowed my daughter to get right into the learning and have fun with the veggies.

Grow

I have never been a great gardener. Luckily, the growing activities in our monthly boxes have been very easy, and have even worked for me! The growing activity in our Beans box involved growing a bean in a clear CD case, which actually gave us an opportunity to watch it sprout and grow, which I thought was incredibly smart! We were even able to take the plant and replant it in a pot, and it is still doing well. (This is a big deal for us!).

We just started the growing project from the Radish box and since it uses a clear jar, we are also able to watch it’s progress. I appreciate that these projects have not only been easy, but also make it possible for us to watch the entire growing process; not just what happens above the soil.

Create

I am always happy to make a themed craft, and the adorable projects in the Veggie Buds boxes are right up my alley! For Bean month, we created a bean puppet out of a paper bag, which made her a little less afraid of trying beans. The radish craft was a small tote bag that we stamped with cut radishes. She had a lot of fun with this one, and she loves carrying her new bag around and telling people she made it with vegetables.

Cook

As I mentioned, I’m a bit of a picky eater. My daughter is usually willing to try new foods, but doesn’t always like to eat her vegetables. I have been so impressed that both months included recipes that we were both able to enjoy! For bean month, we made Green Bean Fries. For radish month, we made Honey Roasted Radish Coins.  The instructions for both recipes were easy to understand and included photographs to help. My daughter was able to help with several parts of the process, which made her more excited to try the completed dish. We will definitely be making these dishes again!

Learn

Give me a good learning activity and I am a happy mom! The learning activities in each box encourage kids to have fun with the vegetable of the month, while also learning interesting facts about it. These activities have included activity pages that encourage kids to sort colors and peel and place stickers, as well as coloring pages with interesting facts. (The radish pages taught her that they are root vegetables and they can be 3 different colors). The box also includes helpful tips for parents on how to get your kids to eat their veggies, as well as book lists for each month’s veggie.

Play

We have had a lot of fun with the games included in these boxes. They are simple to set up and fun to play. The bean box game gave us an opportunity to learn about and identify different kinds of beans. For radish month, we made a ring toss game with a “radish” made out of a paper cup and a skewer. (She named ours Raphael the Radish!). I love that these games encourage kids to play with the vegetables so they already have a comfort level with it when it’s time to try it.

Super Club Extras

I am a big fan of the Super Club box since it includes a themed book! The book during Bean month was One Bean by Anne Rockwell, and it actually walked us through the growing process that was occurring with our little growing project. The book during Radish month was Rah, Rah, Radishes!: A Vegetable Chant by April Pulley Sayre, a colorful book showcasing a wide variety of vegetables. My daughter also loves the adorable felt toys that come in the box every month, and I think kids can have a lot of fun collecting them.

What She Loves About Veggie Buds Club

I have been really happy with how much my daughter loves learning about new vegetables. She really loved the sticker matching games that came in each box. She not only worked on color matching, but practice using her fine motor skills as well. The game that came in the Beans box helped us work on taking turns. I was really excited to try the new recipes included in our boxes, since we love to cook together. They were very easy to follow, and helped us to create some truly delicious dishes. We will definitely make them again!

Overall impression

I am truly impressed with the Veggie Buds Box! We have had so much fun learning about new vegetables, trying new recipes and playing new games together. The recipes have been easy to do together, and have been a delicious way to introduce these new vegetables to our meal rotation. I highly recommend this subscription box to families who are interested in trying new vegetables, spending time together in the kitchen, and learning new things!
