Taking the Sting out of Mosquito Season with Learning Fun!

Mosquito Book

Summer is here, which means the bugs are out! In my family, we are pretty prone to bug bites, so mosquitoes are a big part of our summer festivities. I decided to take some of the sting out of mosquito season by sharing a fun new read aloud. It’s a colorful new book about mosquitoes and ninjas which just may get kids moving! Try the fun activities together to get your mind off the pesky bugs outside.

I also had the opportunity to try The Bug Bite Thing to help reduce itchiness when the mosquitoes do get you. Check out how this all natural product works, and see how it can help you in a jam.

Mosquitoes are fast and sneaky bugs that bite you when you least expect it. While they can bite most of us, today’s book asserts that they aren’t fast and sneaky enough to bite ninjas! Mosquitoes Can’t Bite NInjas was written and illustrated by Jordan P. Novak. This book is a cute story that shows that ninjas are too fast to be caught by mosquitoes, but are mosquitoes fast enough to escape ninjas? This quick and lighthearted read aloud is illustrated with big and bold illustrations that will keep kids giggling until the twist ending.

Move like a Mosquito!

Game of Mosquito Tag – Mosquitoes sneak up on you, so this gives you the perfect opportunity to start a game of tag! Get kids moving by encouraging them to run around as either ninjas or a mosquito. One child plays the role of the mosquito and is armed with red stickers or red chalk. Their job is to chase the other kids (the ninjas) and try to tag them with a red dot (or mosquito bite). Have the kids play for a set amount of time and then count up their mosquito bites. The child with the most bites becomes the next mosquito!

Mosquito Activity

Fine Motor Mosquito Bites – Using this ninja printable, have kids add mosquito bites to him using a Q-tip and red paint, or a red marker. Kids will enjoy adding bites to the ninja while they work on their fine motor skills. My daughter really enjoyed making spots all over the ninja, even if she didn’t quite get them in the circles. You could also use this to work on number recognition and counting skills. Make it into a game and have kids roll a die, then add the correct number of bites to their ninja.

Relieve Itching with the Bug Bite Thing!

In case you aren’t as fast as a ninja, the Bug Bite Thing has you covered! I was really excited to try this product, since we get bit a lot in our family. The Bug Bite Thing offers an all natural and chemical free solution to ease the itching from bug bites. It uses suction to draw out insect poison and is safe for the whole family.

Mosquito Prevention

When I first received the Bug Bite Thing I was pretty annoying to my family, asking constantly if they had a bug bite. I was so excited to try it and see if it worked! When I finally got my first bug bite of the season, I was actually almost happy, until it started itching of course. I grabbed the Bug Bite Thing and followed the instructions. When I released the pump, I did notice less itching immediately.

What did I think?

Mosquito Prevention

Overall I was pleased with the Bug Bite Thing’s ability to reduce my urge to itch for a little while. There is a slight pinch when the pump is pulling on the skin, so I’m not sure my daughter would be patient enough to wait the full 30 seconds in the directions. I will probably still use anti-itch creams to keep the itching at bay for long periods of time, but I like that this all natural and easy to carry pump can reduce itching immediately when we are out and about. Since I can’t guarantee that my daughter will keep anti-itch cream on her while she is busy playing, I appreciate that this can reduce itching until a quiet time when I can apply cream as she needs it.

Mosquito season can be a real pain. Take some of the sting out of it with fun learning games and a new way to stop itching! Have you tried the Bug Bite Thing? Do you have any tricks you use to relieve itching? Share in the comments!

  1. This may be the best post I’ve read today! My 3yo would LOVE this book because he hates bugs! What a perfect book for summer!

    • It is a really cute one! There is a twist ending where the mosquito ends up in a sandwich, so something to keep in mind if that will further a fear of bugs!

  2. Love everything! This book looks super cute, and I know my kids would enjoy it 😁 I have never heard of that bug bite relief thing! That is awesome! I am going to check it out

  3. My daughter reacts the worst to bites! It’s horrible. I might have to check the ‘thing’ out. And that book is super cute. My son would love it. Anything superhero or ninja related and he’s on board. 😉

    • I’m really bad about them too! So far my daughter doesn’t have any fear of creepy crawly things, and I’m not sure if that’s good or not!

  4. Okay we just moved to SC and this is so accurate. A) we need to buy this book! And B) I scheduled it on Facebook and Twitter for my audience, this is just too cute Vicki. I always love your book & activity ideas.

    • Aw, thank you so much! I can’t stand mosquito season, so anything to make it a little less painful!
