Fabulous Fourth of July Books for Families

Get kids excited for Independence Day with these 4th of July books for kids!

What comes to your mind when you think of the Fourth of July? In addition to celebrating our country’s independence, it also brings to mind lots of happy summer memories and celebrations for me. From fireworks and cookouts to picnics and beach trips, there are a lot of symbols and traditions that people connect with the holiday. There are a lot of great Fourth of July books to introduce kids to all the excitement of the holiday! I hope you find some new family favorites to share while celebrating America’s birthday!

The Night Before the Fourth of July

Written by Natasha Wing and illustrated by Amy Wummer

In this installment of her Night Before series, the story follows a family as they celebrate the holiday by attending a parade, hosting a BBQ and more! The cheery illustrations and flowing rhymes make this a fun read aloud. This is a great book for introducing kids to all of the fun traditions of the holiday.

Fourth of July Mice

Written by Bethany Roberts and illustrated by Doug Cushman

This story follows a family of mice as they celebrate all of the fun traditions that Fourth of July offers. They march in a parade, have a picnic, play games, go swimming and watch fireworks. The text is simple and has a nice flowing rhyme, making it a good book for early readers. Young kids will enjoy the bright and colorful depictions of the mice family having fun together. We have the older picture book version of this book, but it now comes in an early reader version as well.

Hats Off for the Fourth of July

Written by Harriet Ziefert and illustrated by Gus Miller

This is a fun story about the parade that takes place in Chatham on the Fourth of July. Bright and colorful illustrations accompany the peppy rhyming story. Kids will enjoy seeing all of the fun parade acts depicted on the pages, as well as the steady rhythm of the text.

Corduroy’s Fourth of July

Written by Don Freeman and illustrated by Lisa McCue

This is a sweet board book which outlines all of the fun things that Corduroy and his friends do together to celebrate the 4th of July. The simple text and colorful illustrations make this a great book for very young bookworms.

L is for Liberty

Written by Wendy Cheyette Lewison and illustrated by Laura Freeman Hines

This is a great book for introducing kids to the Statue of Liberty and what she represents. The story takes you through a brief history of the statue, including how she came to America. It also talks about the Fourth of July and why we celebrate it. This is a great way to introduce the reason behind the holiday to very young kids. They will also enjoy the bold and colorful illustrations which show the Statue of Liberty while it is being built, and as it stands over the harbor welcoming people to this country.

F is for Flag

Written by Wendy Cheyette Lewison and illustrated by Barbara Duke

This is a wonderful book to introduce kids to the symbols or our country – especially our flag. The book takes the reader through the history of the flag, and also discusses the pledge and the national anthem. The colorful illustrations accompanying the text show many places that kids may see the American flag as well.

Apple Pie 4th of July

Written by Janet S. Wong and illustrated by Margaret Chodos-Irvine

This book tells the story of a young Chinese American girl who is upset when her parents are making lots of Chinese food to sell in their store on the 4th of July. She insists that no one will want to buy Chinese food on a holiday celebrating America. Her parents continue preparing the food though, and the girl learns a surprising lesson about the holiday and the United States. The illustrations accompanying the story are beautiful and colorful, and they reflect the character’s changing emotions. This is a great book for teaching kids how the United States is made up of many different cultures.

  1. I am going to see if our local library has any of these books. Leading up to the 4th of July these would be fun to read to my grandchildren.

  2. Great post! I did a similar one and some of the books were the same but you found some that I didn’t. It’s great to encourage reading using holidays.

    • I agree! I love that there are some great kid’s books available now to introduce the different traditions and symbols of the holidays to our kids!

    • I love her Night Before series! They make it on almost all of my holiday lists, haha. She does such a great job of talking about all of the symbols and traditions in a fun way!

    • I thought I had a good amount of books for each holiday before my daughter was born, but then when I started reading them to my daughter before each holiday, I realized how many I was missing!

    • I love giving families a variety of books to choose from. I think it is important for kids to learn about the reason behind a holiday, but also to enjoy a light book about the fun traditions as well!

  6. I’m glad to see that our local library has some of these books! I love adding holiday books to our collection each year, and I think this year will be the “L for Libery” book.
