Mother’s Day is just around the corner, so it is the perfect time to recognize how wonderful mothers are! From taking care of kids, to caring for the house, while balancing life with a smile, moms do it all. There are lots of amazing books that depict the love between a mother and child, many of which I previously shared on my list of books about love. To add to those books, I decided to gather up some funny read alouds for Mother’s Day that celebrate moms and all that they do!

Moms Can Do Anything

My Mom Is the Best Circus was written and illustrated by Luciana Navarro Powell. This board book follows a mom and her two kids as they compare her daily activities to circus acts. Moms are jugglers, clowns and beast tamers on a daily basis all while wearing stilts (high heels). This lighthearted comparison is accompanied by bright and colorful illustrations depicting the many wonderful hats the mom wears during a normal day.

My Mom Has X-ray Vision was written by Angela McAllister and illustrated by Alex T. Smith. This book follows Matthew, a little boy who is pretty sure that his mom has x-ray vision. She can always tell when he is up to something, even when she is in another room! Matthew decides to test his theory and find out if his mom really does have superpowers. Kids will love the bright illustrations and the idea that their mom may be a superhero, while moms will appreciate the humor of the story.

Taking Care of Your Mom

M.O.M. (Mom Operating Manual) was written by Doreen Cronin and illustrated by Laura Cornell. This book is better suited for older kids or for moms themselves who need a good laugh. This is an operating manual for moms, and it walks the reader through caring for a mom. This includes ensuring that she gets enough sleep, proper nutrition, hydration, outside time and more. The illustrations are very detailed and funny, giving little bits of advice, as well as the dos and dont’s of taking care of your mom. There is a lot of good advice for kids about how not to upset their mom as well!

How to Raise a Mom was written by Jean Reagan and illustrated by Lee Wildish. This story teaches young kids how to care for their moms. Starting with how to get her up in the morning, and going through the day, this book includes ideas for dressing your mom, helping your mom relax, and even calming your mom when she gets cranky running errands. Kids will enjoy how the tables are turned from mom taking care of them, and moms will get a kick out of seeing their own words used against them. The story is paired with fun illustrations and has a very sweet ending.

Helping Your Mom

What Moms Can’t Do was written by Douglas Wood and illustrated by Doug Cushman. This book is part of a line of books detailing things that adults can’t do without help from kids. This book lists things that moms can’t do, from making beds without help to being able to say goodbye. Kids will be entertained by the idea that moms can’t do everything, while moms will enjoy the humor in each page. You may even see yourself on the pages! (Anyone else not able to hear themselves think sometimes?). This book has a very sweet ending, revealing the one thing that moms do better than anyone else.

Showing Mom Some Love

My Mommy Hung the Moon: A Love Story was written by Jamie Lee Curtis and illustrated by Laura Cornell. This brightly colored rhyming story captures the feeling we have while we are young, that our mothers can and have done everything. From writing all the books to making rainbows appear after a rain, the narrator talks about all of the amazing things that her mom does to make the world a wonderful place for her. Kids will be entertained by the funny illustrations and the list of things moms do. Moms will appreciate the recognition that they do everything, and then do even more when the day is done.

What NOT to Give Your Mom on Mother’s Day was written by Martha Seif Simpson and illustrated by Jana Christy. The narrator is a little boy who details a list of gross items that you shouldn’t give to your mom for Mother’s Day. However, for each gross item, the story shows an animal mother who would appreciate it. This is a fun way to celebrate mothers in the animal kingdom as well. Kids will be entertained by the notion of giving mom any of the gross items on the page, while moms will appreciate the sweet ending.
